MPs shocked by Iraq report conclusions

Tuesday 12 January 2010

MPs from across the political spectrum have given shocked initial reactions to Tuesday's report criticising the way the Netherlands decided to give political support to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

In particular, MPs say they are concerned at the way parliament was not told the whole truth about the decision making process, the Volkskrant reports.

Labour MPs described the report as 'strong and disturbing'. In particular, the report's conclusions that secret service information on Iraq's supposed weapons of mass destruction was used selectively and that there was not an 'adequate' mandate for military action are disturbing, they said.

'A number of things have obviously gone seriously wrong,' MP Klaas de Vries said. De Vries had campaigned hard in parliament for a proper inquiry into events in the run up to the war. Labour was not part of government at the time.

Government

The ruling Christian Democratic party said the report showed that lessons had to be learned. But the party welcomed the report's conclusion that the then foreign minister Jaap de Hoop Scheffer did not owe his Nato job to the Dutch support for the US, as widely suggested.

The Liberal party (VVD), which formed a government with the CDA at the time, said the conclusions were 'extremely tough'. 'The most important question is how prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende reacts,' said party leader Mark Rutte.

Femke Halsema, leader of the left wing green party Groenlinks, said the conclusions are 'shocking'. Groenlinks has also been a strong supporter of a full parliamentary inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the Iraq war.

I'd be a little more than shocked if I'd participated in the murder of a million Iraqis.

Dutch MPs are Shocked by the Iraq Report???

As a Dutch Citizen I would love to go in debate with our Members of Parliament on their reaction after this conclusion. How can they be shocked on something which have been known even known to the Dutch Public?

How can they deny that they knew about who took decisions to support Mr.George Bush's war. After all during the cabinet meetings Prime Minister Mr.Jan Peter Balkenende would have informed,'Who Took The Decision,he or someone else'? For me its a painful story that Prime Minister and the Parliament Members have and are claiming to be innocents and ignorants not realizing the origin of the decision ( this have been a practice within military dictatorships, where the civilian governments are not involve in policy making but a bunch of military generals, but one can not expact this happens in one of the strongest democracy The Netherlands).

All these parliamentarians showing that they are shocked should at least go for a joint confession that "We are naive politicians or quite incapable for this job, that after many years we are telling our public that "We knew nothing because The decision on joining the war was not required to be discussed in the parliament"!!

This parliament is equally responsible for the wrong doings of the cabinet and the Prime Minister and they should resign on this disastrous failure as they do not have any moral, democratic right to continue!!

What a bunch of idots, Shocked!!! They are worse actors than the WWF wrestlers. I wonder where did they buddy up for their drinks tonight, preparing for their next "Shock" for the public.I am also wondering how these MPs sleep at night while millions killed and millions more are living in fear.

Not condoning the actions of any of the countries who took part in the Iraqi war/invasion, but while we're talking about all the Iraqis who were killed or are living in fear.....have you all forgotten about Saddam Hussein!?! One of the most vicious, ruthless and feared dictators of all time! Many innocents were killed under his reign of terror. Thank God he is no longer in power. I do seem to remember seeing many Iraqis celebrating his downfall in the streets!

Khalid Ahmed Chaudry I am again very impressed with what you write. Very well said and I agree with you 100%!

linda, you have the Bush and Jan Peter Balkenende "talking points" almost word for word...in order to justify the useless and justless killings and the destroying of Irag as a country, they have to say its all for the Iraqs own good to be killed because we got that awful dictator out. You mean to tell me that if they only wanted to kill Saddam they could not have? ..that's not the way the real world works. It was about controlling the country (oil), plain and simple. Don't have the blood of so many innocent people on your hands by justifying the slaughter of so many. The number of people that Hussein killed were how many again? Im sure you know, they were on the same "talking points" page that you got from Bush. ..now I understand all of those killings...it was all for Iraqis own good.... Rule one I learned many years ago...NEVER trust politicians NEVER.

What I wrote in my comment was my own opinion. I haven't read any of what you refer to as "talking points". I personally think Bush is one of the worst presidents the US has ever had, so I would not quote anything he says. And I don't trust politicians either. You and I just have differing views on the war. Who is controlling the oil now? I'm not being sarcastic.....I seriously want to know, because my heating oil bill is outrageous, so I don't think it is the US government.
