Maastricht hospital scraps postcode check

Wednesday 27 January 2010

Maastricht University's teaching hospital (AZM) has scrapped its policy of turning some patients away because they have the wrong postcode following widespread criticism.

The AZM had introduced a policy of not treating patients with very rare immune disorders who do not live nearby because of spending constraints.

The hospital, which claims a budget shortfall of €44m, will now decide what specialisms to cut altogether, a spokesman told the NRC.
