Judge quits after files put out with the rubbish

Friday 22 January 2010

An Amsterdam court judge has resigned after a number of case files were found on the street outside her home in The Hague, mixed up in ordinary household rubbish, the AD reports on Friday.

Elies van Sliedregt told the paper the files should have been destroyed, but that they only referred to old cases.

However, the AD states some of the paperwork is connected to a recent drugs smuggling trial in the capital. Other files focus on Yugoslavian and Rwandan war criminals - including requests for extradition and transcribed telephone conversations.

Court president Carla Eradus told the paper Sliedregt had made 'an extraordinarily stupid mistake.'

Extraordinarily stupid indeed! Why was she even allowed to take these confidential documents home with her? Seems like the it's the court that should be investigated for malpractice that could have led to people's rights being violated.

Non of the Human Being on earth is perfect, and every one of us make mistakes.

Ms.Elies van Sliedregt haven't done this intentionally and by resigning herself without any demand, she could maneuver a great courage and morality.

I,really hope that her resign should not be accepted. I hope other readers of the Dutch News would also join me to provide her our moral support.

Once again its me...Just wanted to add " If our prime minister Jan peter Balkenende can continue even after the David Commission (where bloodshed of hundreds of thousands and destruction of the Iraqi infrastructure were the result of 'Innocent mistake of our PM and his colleagues)

Then why cant Judge Elies van Sliedregt continue ?? Is her crime is serious and more destructive then many others??

I was married to a woman who was a solicitor in UK and who would never listen to me when I used to explain how it was stupid, dangerous, and illegal to throw her client papers in with domestic waste (for 18 years I kept saying it!) - Careless Legal Minds!

It is unfortunate that a mistake was made, a costly one because it involved human beings and their rights. Having said, we are all humans, she made a mistake and was honest and courageous enough to own up, and even resigned her job as a Judge, the position that she has worked hard to achieve. She should be forgiven and allowed to keep her job, I am sure she will be more careful in future and other people in such positions will be careful with people's files. Those files should have been kept in the office and shredded when no longer useful.
