Haitian children arrive in fast-track adoption

A plane carrying 106 Haitian children arrived in Eindhoven on Thursday evening after the Dutch justice ministry agreed to speed up their adoption process.

The children, some wrapped in blankets, were taken from the plane to the Dutch and Luxembourg couples adopting them. The flight was organised by two Dutch adoption agencies.
Fourteen of the children are going to Luxembourg, the rest will stay in the Netherlands. According to some reports, nine of the children do not yet have new families but the Dutch-run orphanage where they lived in Haiti could no longer look after them.
New life
Foreign minister Maxime Verhagen told the Telegraaf he was very grateful to Haiti for allowing the fast-track adoption because of the ‘terrible situation’ there. ‘But most of all I am pleased that the parents and children can build up a new life together here,’ he said.
According to news agency Reuters, the United Nations children’s organisation UNICEF has said foreign adoption of Haitian children should only be considered as a last resort.
And Joan Hansink of United Adoptees International told Reuters it is in children’s best interests to grow up in their own country.
The adoption agencies have stressed that the formal adoption of nearly all the children was almost finalised. The other nine will be looked after in a foster family until the adoption process can be started.
Two Dutch couples in Haiti to collect their newly adopted children were killed in last week’s massive earthquake.
