Dutch bought 1.3 million bikes last year

Monday 25 January 2010

The Dutch bought 1.3 million bikes last year with a total bill of €950m, the RAI conference organisation said on Monday ahead of the annual cycle industry trade fair FietsVak.

Bike sector turnover was up 4%, while the average price of a bike rose 3.5% to €713, the organisation said.

The biggest rise in sales was booked by bikes with a small electric motor. Their sales were up 30% at 150,000. Some 85% of bikes are bought through specialist traders.

The organisation says the Netherlands now has around 18 million bikes in use, or more than one bike for every head of the population.

I didn't realise that the Dutch actually bought bikes. I thought they just nicked them off each other.

I propose a tax on bikes instead of kilometers because I don't ride a bike.

Ofcourse the price of bike will rise, as long as belasting is refunding purchase of bikes every 3 years.

This is good news for the manufacturers, distributors, retailers and lunch/snack shops which feed workers at bike shops... BUT... has modal share of cycling increased? Regarding pedelecs (electric assisted bikes defined legally as bikes), are people riding longer distances; the same distances using less energy; more often visiting their lovers who live in an against-the-wind direction...?

Hoorah for the dutchies, more bikes on the road means less automobiles to share the road with for safer and more wconomical traffic.

€700. for a new bike? Expensive for a push-bike! I bought a 2nd hand one for €80. (7 gears)Just goes to show that here in NL people still have more money than sense!
