1,100 drivers sent for behaviour training

Over 1,100 drivers and motorcyclists have been sent on special courses to improve their behaviour on the roads since the option was made available to police in October 2008, the Telegraaf reports on Monday.

A further 92 drivers have had their licence taken away for refusing to go on a course which comes in addition to a fine.
The seven week course costs around €774 which the drivers themselves have to pay for. Drivers are divided into three types: young drivers, angry drivers and speeders.
Nearly half of the bad drivers are men aged under 25, most of whom have been repeatedly stopped for speeding.
‘By giving out statistics and talking about driving behaviour we hope to get people thinking more about what they do in traffic,’ Rob van Beekum of the driving licence authority CBR told the paper. ‘And it appears to be working. People are showing more socially-desirable behaviour.’
