Sunday’s ‘terror alert’ was false alarm

The Nigerian man who locked himself into the toilet of a Nortwest Airline plane from Amsterdam to Detroit on Sunday was suffering food poisoning, according to the Dutch counter terrorism office NCTb.

The incident came just two days after a Nigerian man, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, allegedly tried to blow up a plane on the same route. He too is believed to have spent some time in the toilet and complained of a stomach upset before apparently trying to detonate explosives strapped to his body.
Because of this, both the man on Sunday’s plane and cabin crew over-reacted. The crew called for assistance from the Transportation Security Administration and the plane landed in a secluded part of Detroit airport.
The FBI announced that the security alert had been a false alarm after searching the auiircraft and questioning the man.
