Public transport card takes off in train

The 1.5 million people who own a Dutch Rail off-peak pass can use it as a public transport smart card (ov-chipkaart) from December 1.

And people with a smart card from another public transport company can use that to pay for rail journeys from today as well, the NS said.

People with anonymous cards have been able to use them on trains since October 1. Season ticket holders will make the switch next year.

Since October 1, 25,000 train journeys have been paid for by smart card which is 'above expectations', a spokesman said.

MPs have urged the transport ministry to stop travellers having to pay multiple start-up charges when switching between different modes of transport and rail operators.
