Netherlands may have to release pirates

Thursday 17 December 2009

The Netherlands may have to release 13 Somalian pirates currently being held on board the frigate MRS Evertsen in the Gulf of Aden because no nearby country will put them on trial, the Volkskrant reports on Thursday.

The paper bases its claims on armed forces and cabinet sources.

The paper says despite intensive diplomatic efforts between the Netherlands, EU officials and a number of African countries, no-one is willing to take the pirates.

The EU, which is in charge of the mission to protect ships in the region, had signed a treaty with Kenya, Tanzania and the Seychelles to deal with any legal processes, the paper says.

Well shiver 'm timbers, pieces of eight & low rations of rum!

I'll take 'em of yer hands an give 'em a taste of Newgate prison! 'O bugger, olde Newgate closed a whiles back, damn!

Seriously though, just keep them afloat outside the local boundaries on a prison ship for a year or two.

Is it too late to send them to Australia?

As a former Naval sailor, this is a travesty of justice. These "pirates" would put a bullet in any victim who challenged them so why does the world bow to them? They should have been left feeding the fish and never stepped onboard MRS Evertsen. Time to send a strong message to these modern day terrorists.
