More university places for trainee doctors
Tuesday 15 December 2009
The health ministry is being recommended to increase the number of places for medical students at Dutch universities.
At the moment there are 2,850 places at medical school, around half of which are allocated to the cleverest students and the rest through a lottery.
But a special government committee says an extra 250 places should now be made available. In addition, the number of places on courses to become a family doctor should go up by 130 to 730, the committee says.
Calls have been made to remove the limits on the number of medical school places altogether.
Supporters say this will eventually lead to an increase in the number of medical specialists and pressure salaries. Dutch specialists earn more than their colleagues in surrounding countries, the Volkskrant says.

Yes! Great Idea!
But ... a 6th year, in
Den Haag, said to me that it's very hard to practice good medicine in Netherlands due to political "Rules". She said, "In Germany it's better due to less interference".
So ... all that expense, years of training, and then can you imagine the horror of not being allowed to practice good medicine in your own country - must be devastating!
