First death of man with mutant swine flu virusFriday 04 December 2009 A man in the northern city of Groningen has become the first patient infected by a mutant strain of the swine flu virus to die in the Netherlands. Harald Wychgel, spokesman for the RIVM told news agency AFP that there has been a ‘minor change in the virus to make it resistant to Tamiflu,’ which is the main treatment for flu. ‘He died not because the virus was resistant, but because he was seriously ill and caught the Mexican [swine] flu,’ Wychgel is reported as saying. According to AFP this is the fifth fatal case of mutated A(H1N1) flu in Europe, after two in France and two in Norway. In total 42 people have died as a result of the H1N1 virus in Holland according to the public health institute RIVM. However health officials say the number of deaths caused by swine flu and hospital admittances for those with the virus is now decreasing. Some 72% of those eligible for an injection against swine flu took part in the national vaccination campaign against the virus at the end of November according to the regional public health organisation GGD. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
Oops! "resistant to Tamiflu" Weird that! Been reading about resistance to Tamiflu for weeks on websites. Someone said, some time ago, on this site, that Tamiflu wasn't the whole answer and that Science/Doctors should look to nature for another solution. Anyway, it's been GoodTimes for the Tamiflu salesforce. By Gerard | December 4, 2009 6:20 PM Is there any statistics available if there has been serious reactions on babies or elderlies after taking A(H1N1) vaccinations. By mmathews | December 4, 2009 6:26 PM > And how many die from the good old fashioned ordinary flu every year? Hype & more hype, how about some media truth for a change? Stop playing us for fools! Stop this BLATANT scaremongering, we have had ENOUGH! You cannot fool ALL the people ALL the time...maybe I should stop reading the news & become an ostrich, - now where was that soft sand again? By stevie | December 4, 2009 9:10 PM I'm still not scared. Anyone else want to speak up against the fear mongering? By Laura | December 6, 2009 12:50 PM The only issue I would be scared if those commenters would be in charge to decide on vaccinations. Lucky for all of us they are not... and even more lucky that H1N1 turns out to be not so dangerous as expected but of course all those commenters knew that right away since August - better than all any virus specialist in the world...
