Scheringa museum declared bankrupt

The modern art museum owned by bankrupt banking boss Dirk Scheringa has itself been formally declared bankrupt, the curators said on Tuesday.

The museum has been closed and the 16 staff have lost their jobs. However, the curators said efforts are still being made to secure the future of the collection and the museum itself. In the meantime, work will continue on a massive new building to house the collection in Opmeer, near Alkmaar, the curators said.
Last month, ABN Amro took away 1,300 works of art in lieu of an outstanding mortgage debt of €32m.
Scheringa’s DSB banking empire collapsed last month.
