More people claim welfare in third quarter
Monday 30 November 2009
The number of people claiming basic welfare benefits rose by 5,000 in the third quarter of this year to 275,000, according to new figures from the national statistics office CBS.
The number of welfare benefit claims rose 7,000 between the first and second quarters, the CBS said.
Welfare benefits (bijstand) are paid to people who have not worked long enough to claim unemployment benefits (ww) or who have used up their jobless benefit entitlement.
In October the benefits payment office UWV said it expects 150,000 people to lose their unemployment benefits and to begin claiming basic welfare next year.
