Kluun novel sells one million copies

Wednesday 25 November 2009

This weekend, one million copies of the book Komt een vrouw bij de dokter (a woman goes to the doctor) by novelist Raymond van de Klundert will have been sold since it was published in 2003, news agency ANP reports.

Some 780,000 copies have been sold in the Netherlands - a record for a Dutch novel, publisher Podium told ANP. The book has also sold well in translation in China, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. The author writes under the pseudenom Kluun

A special edition of the book has been rushed out to coincide with the cinema debut of the film of the book earlier this month.

Komt een vrouw bij de dokter, which was panned by most critics when it was first published, is the semi-autobiographical account of a man who has an affair when his wife develops terminal cancer.

Harry Mulisch's De ontdekking van de hemel (the discovery of heaven) has also sold more than a million copies, but many more of them were sold abroad, ANP said.
