Judges are too soft, says law council poll

Thursday 05 November 2009

Dutch judges are too soft on criminals, according to 85% of those polled on behalf of the council for the administration of justice.

And four out of five think judges should improve the way they explain their reasoning to the general public, the survey showed.

Citizens think judges impose too low sentences because the laws are not tough enough and because judges themselves are soft. Just 23% of those polled said they had 'a lot of trust' in the justice system.

Council chairman Erik van den Emster told the Telegraaf he thought certain recent high-profile cases had coloured opinion. 'But we do accept the criticism,' he told the paper. 'Judges have to explain, explain and explain again.'

Erik van den Emster needs to realize it is not recent high profile cases but a nearly daily dose of light sentences, criminals not "showing up"
to jail (duh, imagine that, convicted
criminals who are given dates to "come to jail" and they fail to do it or dangerous thugs that get a weekend pass and are told to return on thier own and they also do not show up.. go figure!
Not "coloured opinions" but citizens wanting changes.

Judges are more interested in 'rehabilitating' incorrigible low-lifes than in punishing them. In my opinion, most citizens would be better qualified to hand out adequate sentences to felons than ivory-tower judges!
