Half of first borns have unmarried parentsWednesday 25 November 2009 Some 50% of first-born babies in the Netherlands do not have married parents, according to new figures on marriage from the national statistics office CBS. Almost 50% of young women aged 18 to 24 who live with their partner have a child. Although two-thirds of young couples plan to marry at some stage, the recession means more of them are delaying the big day, the CBS said. Some 72,000 people are expected to tie the knot in the Netherlands this year, down 3,500 on 2008. Getting married is cheap. By stevie | November 26, 2009 1:04 PM Stevie, while I can agree with you I can also disagree. Even if you aren't married, if you have lived together for so long and have children together you would likely need lawyers, etc to deal with a break up just the same. Marriages was a decision I did not take lightly. I consider it as a binding contract and not something so easily broken. Fall out of love? Too bad. You signed the contract. The only way I would consider a divorce is if my husband abused me or my children. I could even overlook an affair.. once. I'm sick of couples who just take the easy way out and don't even try to salvage their marriage. Find a solution, compromise! By Laura | November 26, 2009 10:10 PM I agree with Laura, I also think it is unfair to the child to be born with unwed parents. By sandra | November 27, 2009 8:56 AM Well said Laura. Marriage is not a cost, it is a commitment. Children likewise are more a commitment than a cost. So these people cannot afford a wedding (party) but can afford to have children who they must support for many years? What a lame excuse. What they lack is commitment, and are purely acting selfishly. By AC | November 27, 2009 11:18 AM yes they should be marrid first but at the end of the day the most important thing is the child, enough love, food etc, some of you out there are verging on saying it, no these kids arent bastards, what an ancient immoral judgment By adhd | November 28, 2009 2:45 PM Place your comments: |

Call me old fashioned by I believe in 'first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby in the baby carriage' :-P I don't see how you can make such a big decision to have a child together without making a commitment to be married first. I remember a friend of ours was offended that he had to go to the community center to 'declare' the baby to be his since the parents weren't married.
