Fewer psychiatric prison sentences
Monday 09 November 2009
The number of people sentenced to terms in a psychiatric prison (tbs) fell from 183 in 2007 to 118 last year, junior justice minister Nebahat Albayrak told MPs on Monday.
Albayrak is to investigate if suspects are managing to avoid psychiatric prison by refusing to undergo psychiatric tests as part of the investigation into their alleged crimes.
The average stay in a psychiatric prison has now increased to eight years. The minister says she wants to find out if this can be reduced, without risking public safety.
