EU president 'should be a woman'
Monday 16 November 2009
The Netherlands' European commissioner Neelie Kroes is one of several powerful women who have written to the Financial Times calling for more women to be appointed to European top jobs.
Kroes, commission deputy chairwoman Margot Walström and Diana Wallis, deputy chairwoman of the European parliament, said in their letter 'the right man in the right place is often a woman'.
And both the new job of permanent president of the council of ministers and high representative (effectively an EU foreign minister) could be done by women, the trio said.
Kroes has often called for more women in top jobs, but herself faces losing her commission job because of political considerations in the Netherlands.
