Belgian wins AKO literature prize

Flemish writer Erwin Mortier has won this year’s prestigious AKO price for literature for his World War I novel Godenslaap (divine sleep )


Mortier, 43, wins €50,000 for the book, which the judges said is the first great novel about the war from the perspective of a woman.
Based on the recollections of the elderly Helena, Godenslaap was described by Belgian paper De Morgen as ‘monumental’.
