Balkenende's EU president chances shrinkTuesday 03 November 2009 Belgium's prime minister Herman Van Rompuy is emerging as top candidate for the new job of president of the European council of ministers, ahead of Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende. Most Dutch papers say on Tuesday Van Rompuy appears to enjoy universal support among EU leaders. Balkenende is said to have opponents in eastern Europe, stemming from the Netherlands strict stand point on EU budgetary policy, the Telegraaf reports on Tuesday. Balkenende is also said to have lost support because he does not speak French well enough, other papers said. And Nos tv reports Balkenende is considered 'too Anglo Saxon'. Balkenende has repeatedly said he is not a candidate for the job. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
Funny reasoning. Not Anglo Saxon, less strict on budget, from a country which can not even run as a whole??? By Chloe | November 3, 2009 12:46 PM In retrospect, this issue has been going on for months. It would not surprise me at all if these facts were already known about Balk-ellende months ago; that this whole shenanigan has been nothing more than a poll! By stevie | November 3, 2009 7:20 PM Exactly Chloe. And still he manages to run this country successfully. Isn't Europe a bit like Belgium? By Lars | November 3, 2009 8:30 PM If elected our prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende could emerge one of the most sophisticated and popular president of the European Union, that could be a source of honour for our nation too. Netherlands could play much stronger, constructive, productive role during the 'Globalization Era'. I still hope our government, the political leadership, the media and other relevant institutions would accept a challenge to lobby for our prime minister. I think a very little have been done to develope support within our country and the rest of EU members. Through Dutch News I request every body to consider this as a challenge (especially when Belgium prime minister is out there and unfortunately some east European member states are playing negative role against our prime minister's candidacy.
