Waterpolo sisters guilty of attacking opponent

Two sisters have been found guilty of physically abusing an opponent during a water polo match by holding her under the water so long she almost drowned, news agency ANP reported on Thursday.

The court in Almelo sentenced the girls, aged 17 and 22, to 60 and 120 hours community service. They have also been ordered to pay their victim €800 in damages.
The victim suffers from post traumatic stress, panic attacks and concentration problems and was unable to work for six months, the court was told.
The judges said the fact that the incident took place during a pause in play was crucial to the case. The victim had just scored and the whistle had gone when the sisters set upon the girl.
However, there was no question that the sisters had attempted to murder their victim, as the public prosecution department had claimed, the court ruled.
