Rotterdam stages biggest alcohol checkMonday 12 October 2009 Over 16,000 motorists in Rotterdam were breathlysed on Saturday night as part of the biggest ever Dutch crackdown on drunk driving. In total, 329 people failed the test - just under 0.5% of the total checked. Thirty people had their driving licences confiscated on the spot. Police told Nos tv the mass check was part of preparations for the end of year holiday season. © DutchNews.nl Get the DutchNews.nl newsletter in your mailbox: Click here to subscribe
That's what they get paid for - it's just a part of their job. If they do it all the time, it wouldn't be such a problem, would it? By Chris Bradley | October 12, 2009 4:27 PM I have been breathalyzed, & passed, so many tests since moving to Holland under 2.5 years ago, that I cannot seriously remember how many times I've been stopped & checked now. They should introduce same scheme as Rotterdam in Leiden (!!!) By Gerard | October 12, 2009 4:32 PM Anything that brings more awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving is a good thing. Good move by the Rotterdam Police. By Jim Szondy | October 12, 2009 5:56 PM Who does the calculations at DutchNews.nl ? In my books 329 is just over 2% of 16.000, not just under 0,5%. Editors note: You are quite right, our apologies By Frans | October 12, 2009 7:06 PM I was born in Rotterdam ,Now i live in Sydney NSW Australia, here we have Police doing Breath test for over 20 years,Now they are starting testing for illegal drugs. I believe it's a good thing if it saves lives. By Rick Sloof | October 12, 2009 7:25 PM This is seriously the best idea the POLICE have had in a long time here in Netherlands. Road Rage is everyday apparant & KILLS. The Police just never catch enough of them! So totally agree for more random Drugs & Alcohol testing. For once I can say the Police have got it right !.
