Dead humpback whale of Ameland
Friday 09 October 2009
A dead humpback whale has been being found floating between the Wadden Sea islands of Ameland and Terschelling by fishermen.
The whale, which is at least six metres long, has since been towed to shore and left on a beach in the far south of Ameland. Scientists from the natural history museum in Leiden were due in Ameland on Friday to dissect the whale. The skeleton will become part of its scientific collection.
According to tv programme Hart van Nederland it is the first time in 50 years a humpback whale has been found in the area.
