New MEP shocked by ‘generous’ expenses

New Dutch European parliament MP Peter van Dalen is shocked by the generous package of expenses he gets in his new Brussels job, the Telegraaf reports on Friday.

Peter van Dalen, an MP for the orthodox Christian party ChristenUnie, says he gets €4,202 in expenses paid into his bank account every month and does not have to provide any proof of what he has spent the money on.
‘It is incomprehensible that you get this huge amount without any explanation. I cannot explain this to voters, especially in times of crisis,’ he tells the paper.
Van Dalen says he will probably go through the cash this year because he is setting up an office in Amersfoort. And he plans to give all the receipts to his accountant, so proper records are kept of his spending.
A spokesman for the European parliament told the paper the expenses package is the only payment MEPs still get without receipts. Since the summer MEPs have had to prove how much they spend on travel and personnel costs, he said.
