Gymnast suspended for a year
Tuesday 27 October 2009
Yuri van Gelder, the Dutch gymnast who confessed earlier this year to having a cocaine problem and using the drug before competitions, has been given a formal suspension for one year.
The ruling means Van Gelder will be able to compete in the world championships in Rotterdam next October but is out of the 2012 Olympics. Under IOC rules athletes who are banned from competing for more than six months also have to miss the next Olympics.
Van Gelder is world and European champion on the rings.
