Dutch PM pleased with Irish yes on EU

Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende is pleased with the result of the pro-Lisbon treaty vote in Ireland’s referendum at the end of last week, reports news service ANP.

Ireland’s ‘yes’ vote is a big step towards the ratification of the treaty, says Balkenende. He now hopes the Czech Republic and Poland will follow ‘very quickly’. These are the last two countries that have to ratify the agreement.
The new treaty will make the EU more democratic and effective, according to the Dutch prime minister.
