14-year-old girl dies of swine flu

Friday 23 October 2009

A 14-year-old girl who was 'apparently otherwise healthy' has become the sixth person to die of swine flu (H1N1) in the Netherlands, officials said on Friday.

A 40-year-old man, who had been seriously ill for some time, has also died, the health institute RIVM said. These two latest cases bring the death toll from swine flu in the Netherlands to six.

'As with ordinary flu, deaths can happen,' a spokesman was reported as saying by the Telegraaf.

Light epidemic

The Netherlands is in the grip of a 'light' swine flu epidemic, the RIVM said. This week, 10 people a day have been admitted to hospital with the virus. Of them, 61% had other health conditions.

An outbreak becomes an epidemic when more than 55 out of every 100,000 residents have the disease in question. For the past two weeks, doctors have reported 69 cases per 100,000, the RIVM said.

The Netherlands is set to begin vaccinating people against swine flu in November.

Why are the vacinations being delayed? And why is it being refered to as Mexican Flu??

By MIke | October 23, 2009 8:58 PM

its not a Jock,
I had problem (may be still I have it)! one of my friend had infected by Mexican flu. He was about to killed in that condition according to the Dr. checked his blood and found he was totally infected. he was 3 night in Eras Mus Hospital, Rotterdam. luckily he gets his beautiful life after treatment.
Then after I was very sick, had visited to the Dr. FInally I came to know whenever a flu victim goes to the doctor, Without check up, even they do not touched the body. they said its nothing, its a normal flue, Dr.said you look healthy and you have a amenity power to fight with bacteria, just take rest few days in your home you will be OK.
Dear editor, can you post a text in details about government facility to the flue victim. there in the Netherlands so many native/nonnative residents have no insurance. if they do not have it. will they killed without treatment? they can't go to the hospital without insurance, can they? NL government did not announced to check (only for H1N1) their citizen in any condition without cost, did they?
we hope to get detail about it.

I have the same concern as Ramesh does. Last week, I got a very serious flu, but I was refused to see a General Practitioner!!! The doctor simply said in phone that they do not treat flu, no matter it is swine flu or not!

I'm a foreign student with AON insurance. I live alone and really need medical help when seriously sick, especially during the period that an awful disease is fast spreading.

I really felt disappointed after being refused to see a General Practitioner. Could anyone give me some advice about how to enjoy the medical service in a more effective and efficient way? Many thanks!

@Ramesh: If you are working (not sure if this applies to be a student too) you must by law have a health insurance.

@Yin: There is no real cure for this flu. Sure, if your life is at threat then they will try to treat the symptoms. If you have normal flu symptoms without any life threatening symptoms, you're most of the time told to take it easy, in most countries.

Also, the reason they tell you to stay at home is that the GP won't do anything. You will only be at risk to other people will waiting to be told the same thing you were told over the phone.

The flue vaccine has not been tested and contains mercury. 1000mg paracetamol & drinking lots of water sounds more realistic...

Thank Xen!

But I think Tamiflu is necessary, and it's only effective within the first 48 hours.

However, the doctor said that they only treat those flu-like patients who have fever for more than three days and that tamiflu is only for old people and those who got other diseases before.

Definitely they trust too much young people's resistance to swine flu.
