Tougher rules for prison leave

Wednesday 23 September 2009

The justice ministry is to bring in tougher rules governing prison leave following the escape of a convicted people smuggler who was released for a week to get to know his new baby.

Justice minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin says he is to amend existing legislation which would allow prisoners to be monitored properly while they were outside prison.

Saban Baran, sentenced to 7.5 years in jail, was allowed out to spend time with his new family even though he was known to be a flight risk. He married one of his victims from jail at the beginning of this year.

During his leave from prison, Baran was supposed to report daily to a local police station. One day he failed to turn up, but the public prosecution department was only informed three days later. He is now thought to be in Turkey.
