Title holders AZ in third defeat in a row

Dutch premier league champions AZ of Alkmaar suffered their third defeat in eight days this weekend with a 1-0 defeat by NEC Nijmegen.

AZ lost 2-1 to ADO Den Haag last weekend, followed by a 1-0 loss in their Champions League debut against Olympiakos Pireaus on Wednesday.

The club is now sixth in the league with 12 points from seven matches.

PSV Eindhoven beat arch rival Feyenoord 1-3 in Rotterdam on Sunday and leads the league over FC Twente on goal difference with 17 points. Twente beat Friesian side Heerenveen 2-0.

Amsterdam's Ajax is third with 16 points after a 4-0 win over league newcomers VVV of Venlo.
