Romanian minister to visit after all

Romania’s foreign minister Cristian Diaconescu is to visit the Netherlands for talks with his Dutch counterpart after all, the Telegraaf reports on Thursday.

On Wednesday it emerged the minister had cancelled today’s visit because he was angry about Dutch reaction to a critical EU report on Romania and Bulgaria’s efforts to combat organised crime and corruption.
The Netherlands said it would call on the EU to increase pressure on the two countries to step up their campaign or face financial sanctions. Romania described the Dutch response as ‘unfriendly’.
The paper says Dutch foreign affairs minister Maxime Verhagen telephoned Diaconescu to pursuade him to go ahead with the visit. ‘Within the EU you must always keep talking to each other if you have disagreements,’ the paper quoted Verhagen as saying.
