Rail firms told to improve safety

Rail network management firm ProRail has told rail freight companies to improve their safety standards following last weekend’s fatal crash involving two goods trains.

It was the fourth accident involving goods trains this year.
‘These [accidents] could have all ended in real disaster,’ Bert Klerk, ProRail director told the Volkskrant on Tuesday. ‘Something has to happen soon or I will ban cargo trains from the railways.’
He called on transport ministers to step up their spot checks of engines and other equipment. ‘Only machinery which has recently been approved should be allowed on the railways,’ he said.
ProRail has given rail freight firms until January 1 to make improvements or be refused access to the railway network, the Volkskrant said.
