‘Liberals should work with Wilders’

The right-wing Liberal party (VVD) should work closer together with the anti-immigration PVV party headed by Geert Wilders, former VVD leader Hans Wiegel said on the tv show Goedemorgen Nederland on Tuesday morning.

VVD veteran Wiegel said that while he does not always agree with Wilders, this should not rule out cooperation with the PVV. Many people have confidence in the PVV leader, he said.
Wiegel praised the fact that Wilders is prepared to make a stand on issues. He said that when Wilders was a member of the VVD (he left the party in 2004) he had been a ‘a reasonable person with whom it was possible to make compromises’.
VVD leader Mark Rutte, who was also on the tv programme, did not react enthusiastically to the suggestion of working with the PVV. He is reported to have said that the PVV has moved too far to the left in terms of economic policy.
