Father not guilty of circumcising daughter

A 30-year-old man has been found not guilty of mutilating the genitals of his five-year-old daughter because there is not enough evidence he actually carried out the deed, judges in Haarlem ruled on Friday.

The public prosecution department had demanded a six-year jail term.
The man was jailed for three months for mistreating the girl. He has already served that time while waiting to come to trial.
The case came to light after the girl allegedly told her foster parents that her father had cut her with a big pair of scissors. The father says he abhors female circumcision and blames the foster parents, news agency ANP said.
