Extra taxi checks levy €21m in fines

An official crack-down on irregularities in the taxi sector has resulted in an extra €21m for the treasury from fines and taxes, the finance ministry said on Friday.

In total, officials from the fraud office, tax department and social security ministry looked at 680 taxi companies. Of those, 376 were subjected to an in-depth investigation, the ministry said.
Problems, mainly to do with book-keeping and tax, were found at 81% of the companies singled out for further checks.
