‘Dutch clothing firms underpay Asian workers’

Garment industry workers in Asia are often paid far less than they need to survive by clothing manufacturers working for companies such as C&A, JC Rags and We, according to the Dutch arm of fair wage lobby group Clean Clothes Campaign.

In a report out on Wednesday, the organisation is set to say most workers are employed for at least 70 hours a week but earn less than half the amount needed to maintain a family, news agency ANP reports.
For example, garment industry workers in Bangladesh, who make clothes for the mother and baby chain Prénatal, earn just under €30 a month, ANP quotes the report as saying. But families need around €89 a month to pay for housing, food and schools.
The Dutch branch of the lobby group is backed by Oxfam Novib and the FNV trade union federation.
