Mixed fortunes in Europe for Dutch clubs

Amsterdam’s Ajax, PSV Eindhoven and FC Twente all won their first leg tie in Thursday night’s play-offs for a place in the Europa League.

Ajax thrashed Slovan Bratislava 5-0 at home, putting the Amsterdam club in an enviable position for the second leg.
PSV beat Tel Aviv side Bnei Yehunda 1-0 away, with a goal from midfielder Ibrahim Afellay. And FC Twente beat Azerbaijan team Karabach 3-1 at home.
Heerenveen managed a 1-1 away draw against Greek club PAOK.
However, NAC Breda’s chances of progressing in the tournament are now in doubt after the club lost 3-1 against Spanish team Villarreal.
