Lottery adverts were misleading

Advertisements for the State Lottery draw earlier this week guaranteeing a record jackpot of €27.5m were misleading, the advertising code committee has ruled.

The advertising watchdog received over 60 complaints after the draw on Monday evening fell on a ‘one-fifth’ lottery ticket (the basic State Lottery ticket costs €15 but it is also possible to buy a ticket for €3). This means that only one-fifth of the prize money was released.
The advertising code committee said it took into account the fact that the number of people who bought a one-fifth ticket for Monday’s draw was bigger than those that bought a full-price ticket. This means the chance of the full jackpot being paid out was less than 50%
According to some media reports on Friday, the State Lottery will introduce a new ticket system as from September.
Meanwhile the winner of last week’s draw finally came forward to claim his €5.5m tax-free prize money on Thursday. No details have been released except that the winning ticket was bought in Utrecht.
