Health minister Ab Klink has asked Groningen University’s teaching hospital to explain why it is recruiting operating theatre assistants in India, the Volkskrant reports on Tuesday

Socialist Party MPs and a foundation promoting healthcare in developing countries say the hospital is breaking international agreements not to employ nurses and doctors from countries which have their own staff shortages.
Unions say it is opting for the cheaper option, rather than employing and training up its own personnel.
The hospital says it has a shortage of theatre staff. Eight Indian nurses are due to start in October, and six more will arrive in January.
A spokesman told the paper the hospital is working on a structural solution. ‘But training takes time, so it will be a while before we can reap the benefits,’ he was quoted as saying.
