Dune fire destroys at least five hectares

At least five hectares of dunes near Schoorl on the Noord-Holland coast were destroyed by fire at the weekend, the Volkskrant reports on Monday.

The entire area remains closed to visitors and fire officers expect it will be Wednesday before they have finished ensuring all the fire is out. The cause of the fire is being investigated.
Much of the area hit by fire was covered with conifers, first planted to protect the dunes which at 54m are the highest in the country. Now forestry managers are considering replanting the area as mixed woodland, which is less vulnerable to fire, the paper says.
The fire led to the evacuation of some 550 people for a time.
