Zeeland should have 'nuclear cluster'

Tuesday 14 July 2009

The southern province of Zeeland should get a second, much larger nuclear power station than Borssele, the province's queen's commissioner Karla Peijs says in Tuesday's NRC.

In addition, the reactor in Petten which makes medical isotopes, should also be moved to the region, establishing a proper nuclear cluster, Peijs said during a debate on Monday evening.

The Petten reactor is nearing the end of its lifespan and its replacement may be in a different location, the NRC says.

But Labour MP Diederik Samson said there were very good reasons not to build the Petten replacement in the Netherlands at all. Paris would be a good option because it would be easier to fly the isotopes all over Europe, he was reported as saying.

However, Peijs said Zeeland was also well placed and the reactor would be good for the local economy.

The Netherlands has just one nuclear power station, at Borssele, but there is growing political support for building a second one.
