Dutch troops responsible for protecting Bosnian Muslims in the UN enclave of Srebrenica during the Bosnian war in 1995 did their best under difficult circumstances, says Radovan Karadzic.

The former leader of the Bosnian Serbs is currently facing charges of genocide at the Yugoslavia war crimes tribunal in The Hague.
Karadzic’s comment is made in an interview with ANP news service reports the AD newspaper on Wednesday.
Karadzic is quoted as saying that it was ‘necessary’ for the Bosnian Serb army to take action to stop repeated attacks on Serb villages by Bosnian Muslims from the UN enclave.
‘Tragic deaths’
‘They killed hundreds of citizens and then retreated to the safety of the safe zone’, Karadzic is quoted as saying.
It is alleged that the Bosnian Serb army under the command of Karadzic seized Muslim men from Srebrenica on July 11, 1995. ‘The tragic deaths that followed were not expected or planned,’ according to Karadzic.
Around 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed following the raid on Srebrenica.
Karadzic was extradited to the war crimes tribunal in July last year after 13 years on the run and is to be tried for genocide and other war crimes in connection with the events in Srebrenica.
