Holiday jobs put benefit payments at risk

The opposition right-wing VVD party is furious that parents whose children take on holiday jobs risk losing part of their child benefit payments, reports the Telegraaf on Monday.

VVD MP Stef Blok points out that the child benefit system is not dependent on income levels and says it is ridiculous to punish parents whose 16 or 17 year old children earn over €2,390 a quarter from holiday or weekend jobs.
Child benefit is paid automatically for children up to 16 and for teenagers between 16 and 18 who are still at school.
Blok has called on the social affairs ministry to take action to protect poorer families.
He says the €11m which the treasury would lose as a result can easily be compensated for by stopping child benefit payments made to accounts outside the European union, reports the Telegraaf.
