The foreign affairs ministry has reportedly asked the Italian authorities to explain why so many Dutch tourists have been given traffic fines in recent weeks.

The AD says the Dutch embassy in Rome, the ANWB motoring organisation and legal aid insurer DAS have had hundreds of complaints about the fines, which relate to areas of Italy’s biggest cities which only cars with permits can enter.
Although these zones have existed in cities like Rome, Florence and Verona for years, police have recently begun enforcing them, the paper says.
In addition, Dutch drivers are being fined €101 for entering the zones while Italians are only fined €80, the paper quotes a ministry spokesman as saying.
Holidaymakers heading for Italy are now being warned not to enter areas marked with a sign Zona Traffica Limitato or ZTL.
