'Everyone's gay in Amsterdam'

Wednesday 15 July 2009

The Dutch tourist board has launched a new advertising campaign in North America with the tag line 'everyone's gay in Amsterdam'.

The new campaign, featuring posters of smiling people and animals, is designed to capture the 'all-inclusive and welcoming vibe' of the city, rather than focusing on gay stereotypes or sexualized images, according to travel industry website travelpulse.com.

The Dutch tourist board NBTC was one of the first destination marketing organisations to target the lesbian and gay market in 1993.

I am not sure what the intended message is with this "smiling people and animals". Why not show some pissed American staggering aimlessly thru the RLD? I am afraid that if the American economy continues at its current pace there will be no tourism anyway.

Money wasted....First you have to tell them that Amsterdam is not in Belgium and not so close to Brussels either.

Creepily similar to the 60's KLM ad campaign inviting hippie minded Americans to 'Fly KLM and sleep in the Vondelpark'. (That didn't last long). Yet another example of lifestyle marketing in that oh-so-subtle world of advertising.

Just wait until those American tourists get here and find Amsterdammers not especially homosexual or happy.

...and when they find out the moralists are in charge like mayor cohen cxl the gay events during last years gay pride day on the busiest gay street, cause he did not want to offend the anti-gay immigrants (of course for the gays safety...at least it was not because of the mob..one of their favorite excuses)....and when the RLD is no more and all the coffee shops are closed, you won't have any tourists from anywhere...and besides the whole city looks like a bombed out mess.....

I am from America and have been to Amsterdam seven times in the last 2 years. I also know where Brussels (in Belgium)is as I have been there many times also. I do have to admit the ad is rather silly. I also have to take opposition to the "pissed American staggering aimlessly" comment. I can tell you without error that the people you are thinking about are almost always the Irish or other Europeans. You apparently don't understand that the international language is English and therefore you probably think that everyone who speaks English is from America. The Americans visiting Amsterdam behave very professionally. I can't so as much for the Europeans in you own back yard. By the way, I was the victim of three attempted muggings by your Moroccan citizens of Amsterdam, of which all failed.

to Maary:
Yes, at one time, 'gay' also meant 'happy'. But nowadays nobody thinks of that meaning anymore. People only link it to the 'other' meaning. So saying that 'everyone in Amsterdam is gay' will send out the wrong message. I predict it will keep a lot of people from visiting Amsterdam instead.

I have no problem with people's gender preferences . What I don't understand is why do same- gender males hide behind the word "gay " and refer to women as lesbians and not gay women ?
Another thing I don't understand is why the gays refer to heteros as straight .
I always thought that the opposite to gay was sad and that the opposite to straight is bend .
Can someone explain things to me ?

I think the ad is fun, the design caught my eye. I like it.
