Emergency passport not enough for US

Friday 03 July 2009

Immigration police are warning travellers to the US that the emergency Dutch passports issued to people who have lost their travel documents will not get them into the US, news agency ANP reports.

The emergency passports do not contain the microchip which passports need to have to ensure entry into the US, ANP said.

Last summer some 200 people applied for an emergency passport to travel to the US, mainly because their existing passport had expired or they only had an ID card.

In addition, children must also have their own passports to travel to the US but are not eligible for emergency documents if parents have forgotten to apply for them, police said.

The speed with which the US has introduced the new requirements make the warning necessary, spokesman Rob Stenacker told ANP. 'One can well imagine that not everyone is aware of the new demands,' he said.

Why is it that this ANP news does NOT report the most important item: the obligation for Dutch (and many other European) travelers to the United States, to have a socalled ESTA Visum. This obligation is enforced since January 1 of this year and nobody enters the US without it.

Are only Dutch citizens required to have passports with microchips, or does this requirement extend to other citizens of the EU?

Canadians have not been advised of any such requirement. And, so far as I know, Canadian passports contain no microchips.

Have the Dutch been naughty?

The USA is showing its protectionism, do not go there. The USA continues to isolate it from the rest of the world, this making it more vulnerable to numerous bad things that usually follow. Remember ex-President Bush tripling the import tax of Roquefort cheese when France refused to buy GM animal products or GMO agricultural products. They are digging a hole they may not get out of.

the microchips are for all europe. to be honest i really feel disgusted by all the security that exists in the states even if the country is WONDERFUL, (when at the same time 1000s enter illegaly from mexico for example)...i.e persons that could be terrorists etc.
i believe that EU should impose that same measures to US citizens coming here.why should i have to wait 2 hrs in front of lines to check my passport and this stupid question..."what are you doing in the states sir"...i mean give me a break.
