Dutch Nato chief steps down

The Dutch Christian Democrat politician Jaap de Hoop Scheffer has made his last farewells in Brussels and will formally hand over his job of Nato Secretary General to the former Danish prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Friday.


The 61-year-old former foreign affairs minister has headed Nato since 2004 and seen the alliance expand from 19 to 28 members.
Last week Scheffer was admitted to hospital where he underwent a procedure to clear a blocked artery. He was released from hospital on Monday.
Scheffer’s plans for the future are not known. 2004.
