MPs from the three coalition parties have written to junior health minister Jet Bussemaker asking her to make a statement on plans by Amsterdam’s AMC hospital to offer egg-freezing services to women who may want children at a later age.

MPs want to know if the AMC’s plans are legal and what the medical implications are.
On Wednesday it emerged that the teaching hospital plans to allow women to freeze their eggs for implantation up to the age of 50. Women’s fertility and the quality of their eggs decline sharply after the age of 40.
Women will have to pay for the eggs to be harvested, which involves a period of taking hormones. The service is already offered to women who risk becoming sterile because of cancer treatment.
Nos tv says a commercial company is also planning to offer a similar service, without going into details.
Dutch women have their first baby on average just before they turn 30, making them among the oldest first-time mothers in the world.
