Google Streetview solves mugging

Friday 19 June 2009

The camera car which toured Groningen for the Google service Streetview appears to have captured two muggers and their victim on film, the Groninger Courant newspaper reports on Friday.

The robbery took place in the Merwedestraat in the northern capital last September. In March the victim found the photo on Streetview and got in touch with the police. Two brothers aged 24 have since been arrested.

The Dagblad van het Noorden newspaper's website says the Streetview images were taken just before the brothers stole the boy's mobile phone and €165 in cash.

Because the faces of the three have been blurred, police got in contact with Google in the US to have the images unscrambled. One was recognised by police and because he was a twin, the other suspect soom emerged to be his brother, the paper said.

Now that is what can be called "Double-Trouble"

Sometimes technology helps. But how many homes have been robbed by criminals using the same technology? 1984 is upon us in more ways than I care to count. I for one still have older technology products "just in case".
