Rotterdam spends €80,000 on Pim

Rotterdam city council spent €80,000 buying Pim Fortuyn memorabilia at this weekend’s auction of the murdered politician’s possessions, the Telegraaf claims on Tuesday.

Fortuyn, who founded the populist ‘liveable’ political movement, was killed by an animal rights activist in 2002.
The paper says an anonymous buyer bidding on behalf of the council bought Fortuyn’s desk, chair and a number of desk-top items. The council also bought his book collection and several portraits, including one by noted photographer Paul Huf.
Part of the city council’s collection will be placed in the city archives and the rest will go the museum of Dutch history, the paper says.
Cigarette butt
The paper also carries an interview with Heerlen resident Sandra Rosenboom who spent €882.60 buying the remains of the last cigarette Fortuyn smoked at home.
‘I had to have it,’ Rosenboom told the paper. ‘I smoke myself but it is more about having something that belonged to Pim in my own house.’
The cigarette has a certificate of authenticity from Fortuyn’s housekeeper, the paper says.
The auction of 9,000 items in total raised €495,000. The most expensive item was a painting of Fortuyn with his two dogs which went for €41,000.
