Free museums for under-12s on hold
Wednesday 24 June 2009
Plans to scrap museum admission fees for those under the age of 12 have been put on hold because of doubts about the effectiveness of the scheme, news agency ANP reports on Wednesday.
Culture minister Ronald Plasterk has set aside €5m to fund a small-scale experiment and has asked the national museum association to draw up a proposal.
The government had planned to make museum visits for the under-12s free from September 1, but there are now doubts about whether this will lead to a 'substantial' increase in visitor numbers. Plasterk wants a 30% increase in children visiting musuems by 2011.
